Our Commitment
Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) is committed to building a healthier, more sustainable future—together with the communities we serve. Through collaboration, transparency, and action, we are advancing our commitment to protecting air quality across all aspects of our operations.
These efforts reflect our broader goal of maximizing aviation’s social and economic benefits while minimizing its impact.

From cleaner operations to cleaner air, HVN is committed to building a healthier, more sustainable future — together with the communities we serve.
Residential Indoor Air Program (RIAP)
In June 2025, Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) launched a Residential Indoor Air Program (RIAP) to provide high-efficiency air purifiers to 838 local households at no cost — a proactive response to community requests that brings together local voices and airport leadership to deliver real-world solutions.
Outreach to eligible residents began in August 2025. Applications will be received on a rolling basis. For more information on the RIAP program, visit HVNSound.com and select Air Purifiers.
Air Quality Monitoring
The City of New Haven has installed 11 particulate matter (PM2.5) sensors throughout the city, including near major transportation corridors. These sensors provide near real-time data—updated every 10 minutes—allowing residents and stakeholders to monitor local air quality.
Four of these sensors are currently positioned in and around HVN.

About the sensors: The City of New Haven uses sensors from PurpleAir, a common provider of low-cost community air quality (PM2.5) sensors.
Powering the Future of Aviation with NASA, National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)
In September 2024, NASA and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) selected Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) as the first FAA Part 139 commercial airport in the U.S. to join the “Airport as Energy Nodes (ÆNodes)” initiative — a national effort exploring how airports can supply the energy needed for future zero-emission aviation.
As electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft and eVTOL air taxis emerge, ÆNodes will help develop the alternative energy systems airports need while supporting broader community energy solutions.
