Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) and City of New Haven Improve Traffic Patterns and Management, More Infrastructure Updates Coming this Summer
Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), in partnership with the City of New Haven, today announced a series of traffic and infrastructure
improvements aimed at reducing neighborhood congestion, enhancing the passenger experience, and supporting the airport’s long-term growth in a responsible and community-centered manner, which are now in effect.
A key feature of the plan is the opening of a second airport exit and the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Dean and Burr Streets. Additional on-site improvements include a new one-way pattern for Arrivals and Lot C traffic, guiding vehicles directly to the new exit and away from Fort Hale Road to Burr Street and Townsend Avenue, reducing airport-related traffic on Fort Hale Road by an estimated 30%. Departures traffic remains unchanged and will continue to follow the pre-existing route.
These improvements directly respond to community feedback requesting traffic relief, as voiced during the annual Ward 18 meetings hosted by Mayor Elicker and Tweed New Haven Airport.
“The city has implemented new traffic calming solutions citywide, and in this case, the new roundabout will enhance traffic safety at Tweed and in the surrounding neighborhood,” said Mayor Justin Elicker. “The roundabout was in response to concerns raised at the 2024 annual Tweed Community Meeting. I am thankful to the City’s Engineering Department and Avports for executing this project in a timely manner.”
“These infrastructure upgrades reflect our ongoing commitment to responsible growth, improving quality of life for nearby residents while delivering a smoother, more efficient travel experience at HVN,” said Michael Jones, CEO of The New HVN. “They mark a significant step forward in strengthening our existing infrastructure as we continue advancing plans for a more modern, sustainable airport that will serve the region for generations to come. I=E2=80=99m especially grateful to Mayor Elicker for his dedication to listening to residents, even on the most challenging issues.”
In response to community feedback, the City of New Haven will deploy electronic traffic signage to redirect vehicles during afternoon dismissal hours at nearby Nathan Hale School.
HVN is actively working on additional upgrades this summer to enhance operations and improve the passenger experience:
- TSA Screening Capacity: Construction is underway on a third TSA screening lane, which will increase throughput and reduce wait times, boosting overall screening capacity by 50%.
- Off-Site Parking: HVN is advancing plans for expanded off-site parking options to increase capacity and reduce vehicle volume in and around the airport, supported by shuttle service.
As HVN moves through the permitting process for its new terminal and associated infrastructure improvements, airport leaders reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, open dialogue, and meaningful collaboration with residents and local stakeholders.
As part of ongoing efforts to gather community input that enhances both quality of life and airport operations, recent updates include additional security lines, improved traffic flow on and off airport, the installation of noise and air quality monitors, and the distribution of air purifiers. Each initiative is designed to reduce impact and improve the overall experience. These improvements reflect a broader commitment to building a more efficient, responsive, and community-focused airport, one that serves both travelers and neighboring residents.
