HVN Welcomes 5 Millionth Passenger, Underscoring Growth, Demand, and Regional Impact

July 27, 2026

New Haven, CT – This month, Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) celebrates a historic milestone, welcoming its five millionth passenger since the launch of expanded commercial service in 2021. The achievement comes less than a year after the airport surpassed four million passengers, reflecting the extraordinary growth that has transformed HVN into one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States.

The milestone is particularly significant given the airport’s rapid trajectory: HVN welcomed its one millionth passenger in 2023, surpassed four million passengers in 2025, and has now reached five million passengers in 2026. The pace of growth underscores increasing demand for convenient, affordable air travel options in Southern Connecticut, and highlights HVN’s growing role in Connecticut’s transportation landscape and as an economic engine for New Haven County.

The 5 million milestone also arrives as Connecticut commemorates its 250th anniversary, providing an opportunity to reflect on the state’s history of innovation, connectivity, and economic growth. As Connecticut looks toward its future, HVN continues to play an increasingly important role in connecting residents, businesses, and visitors to opportunities throughout the region and across the country.

“This milestone belongs to our passengers, our airline partners, our employees, and the communities that have supported Tweed for the past five years,” said Michael Jones, CEO of The New HVN. “As New Haven and the region continue to grow, we’re proud to grow alongside them—expanding access and opportunity as we shape the next century of air travel for Southern Connecticut.”

Since 2021, HVN has experienced unprecedented growth, expanding from a regional airport with limited service into a key transportation hub serving travelers from across Connecticut and neighboring states. The airport now offers nonstop service to 34 unique destinations throughout the country, creating new opportunities for tourism, business travel, and economic development.

“Reaching five million passengers at Tweed-New Haven demonstrates how strategic transportation investments can drive economic growth while also delivering practical convenience for Connecticut travelers,” said Governor Ned Lamont. “This milestone reflects measurable operational progress, including expanding local jobs and supporting key Southern Connecticut sectors like healthcare, bioscience, and higher education. We’re doing that while also giving residents direct access to an expanding network of nonstop destinations and helping to ensure travel remains efficient and affordable for working families.”

“Reaching five million passengers reflects the growing demand for convenient, accessible air travel in Southern Connecticut,” said Robert Reed, Chairman of the New Haven Airport Authority. “In just the past year, we’ve expanded service with new nonstop destinations like Puerto Rico and Houston, giving travelers more options for business, leisure, and visiting family closer to home. As we look ahead, we remain focused on thoughtfully growing service that strengthens Connecticut’s connectivity and supports the needs of our communities.”

The airport’s growth has generated substantial economic benefits for the region, supporting hundreds of jobs and creating opportunities for local businesses while increasing access to Southern Connecticut for visitors and investors. Recent investments in airport infrastructure, customer amenities, and transportation options have helped position HVN for continued success.

The five million passenger milestone follows several years of significant accomplishments, including expanded airline service, major federal infrastructure investments, enhanced ground transportation options, and continued planning efforts to support future growth and improve the passenger experience.

As HVN looks ahead and celebrates its 95th anniversary, the airport remains focused on the future. With a new terminal in development and continued expansion of destinations, HVN is building on its legacy while creating even more opportunities for travelers across the region.
